SEABRIDGE TEAMS UP WITH GO OCEAN
TO RESTORE SEAGRASS MEADOWS

As you know, at SEABRIDGE we don’t mind getting our hands dirty: we regularly plant trees  -sometimes in our backyard, sometimes a little further away, and every year we take part in the annual Port of Antwerp and Zeebrugge port clean-up.

This time we don’t get our hands dirty, but we do get them wet. This time we are not planting trees on our beloved planet Earth, but we are literally and figuratively diving under water with Go Ocean to restore sea meadows and plant sea grasses.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

At SEABRIDGE we actively integrate sustainability into our business operations. Our own actions and points for improvement within the company are very strongly focused on the relevant SDGs from our materiality analysis.
SDG 14 and SDG15 will ultimately pose a major challenge, but being a logistics food service center located in the port of Zeebrugge, we are less able to align our own actions with this. That is why we as a company have decided to support some biodiversity projects that go beyond decarbonisation.

In the past we have planted trees and restored forest areas, now we are expanding our efforts to the ocean and contributing to the health of underwater ecosystems. We recently found a unique ally in Go Ocean and their ‘seagrass meadow restoration’ project. By focusing on the often-overlooked underwater habitats, we aim to create a positive impact on a global scale, furthering the cause of ocean conservation.

We’re expanding our tree-planting mission to protect our planet’s oceans through restoring sea grass meadows.

PROJECT | Seagrass Meadow Restoration

✔️ Purpose | WHY is SEABRIDGE Restoring Seagrass Meadows?

Seagrass is the world’s only flowering plant capable of living in seawater and an incredible ally in the fight against climate change. Globally, seagrass captures carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests, accounting for 10-18% of total ocean carbon storage despite covering less than 0.1% of the seafloor. Seagrass can also help protect our coast from damaging storms and erosion through dampening the force of waves and is very effective at removing pollutants from our waters. Seagrass meadows are a vital habitat for marine life. Seagrass has its own superpowers – a single acre can support nearly 40,000 fish and 50 million small invertebrates, such as lobsters and shrimp. These underwater meadows are also a sink for blue carbon – the carbon trapped by the world’s ocean and coastal ecosystems.

SEABRIDGE is a logistics company committed to environmental stewardship, and recognises the critical role that seagrass meadows play in supporting marine life. Seagrasses -unique underwater plants- create essential habitats for a diverse array of marine species. By teaming up with Go Ocean and contributing to their ‘restoring seagrass meadow’ project, we are extending our efforts to the ocean, contributing to the health of underwater ecosystems.

✔️ Go Ocean | Perfect Ally in the fight for conservation, sustainable use and development of the oceans, seas and marine resources.

Due to the extreme pressure on the ocean and its ecosystems, our blue long needs help. Go Ocean accelerates the recovery and expansion of ocean ecosystems worldwide.
Climate project experts select and monitor the best ocean projects worldwide. In those projects, we team up with local experts to restore the right ocean ecosystems in the right regions to have the most positive impacts on biodiversity, CO2 storage, employment, livelihoods and the coastal economy.
Go Ocean not only restores, but also ensures that the restored ecosystem is maintained and monitored.

UPSHOT|ADDED VALUE

Much like our previous tree planting and forest restoring initiatives, the seagrass meadow restoration aligns with global sustainability goals. By revitalizing underwater ecosystems, SEABRIDGE is contributing to the conservation of marine biodiversity, crucial for the overall health of our planet. This project acknowledges the interconnectedness of terrestrial and marine environments, reinforcing our commitment to environmental sustainability.

This ‘seagrass meadow restoration’ action powered by Go Ocean contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals:
